Bobby Witt Jr.

The Best Shortstop in the American League

Bobby Witt Jr. was the second overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. He reached the majors in 2022, had a solid but uneven rookie year, then broke out across 2023 and 2024 into one of the best all-around shortstops in baseball. His 2024 season — .332 batting average, AL hits leader, elite shortstop defense, and a second-place MVP finish to Aaron Judge — established him as a franchise player for the Royals and moved his card market into a different tier.

For collectors, Witt is a rare combination: a top-tier defensive shortstop, a middle-of-the-order hitter, a small-market face of the franchise, and a contract structure that keeps him in Kansas City for the foreseeable future. His card catalog has the structure of a player whose best years are still ahead — a deep parallel ladder, a strong Bowman Chrome Prospects Auto, and two Topps RCs.

Key Cards to Own

Witt’s catalog is young but already has a clear hierarchy.

2020 Bowman Chrome Prospects #BCP-25 — the cornerstone Bowman Chrome Prospect

Printed two years before his MLB debut, this is Witt’s Bowman Chrome Prospects card. The Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto (CPA-BWJ) is the most-chased Witt card, with a numbered parallel ladder. Check current eBay sold listings for today’s pricing.

2022 Topps Chrome #221 — the Chrome RC

Witt’s officially-recognized Topps Chrome rookie, a short-print card numbered just past the 220-card base set. Raw copies and PSA 10s both trade actively.

2022 Topps Update — the debut-season rookies

The 2022 Topps Update set has Witt’s base rookie card (#US100) and a second card (#US187). This is the most accessible entry point for collectors who want a licensed Witt rookie without chasing Chrome.

How to Buy Witt Cards

If you’re opening boxes, 2024 Bowman Chrome and 2024 Topps Chrome hobby boxes are the sealed products to look at.

Parallels & Variations to Know

The 2020 Bowman Chrome Prospects Auto (CPA-BWJ) comes in a numbered parallel ladder, from the Refractor up to the Superfractor. Check the card’s checklist for the print run of each parallel before buying.

Investment Outlook

Witt’s resume at this stage — AL batting title, MVP runner-up, Gold Glove-caliber defense, a playoff appearance — is already stronger than many established stars were at comparable points in their careers. His cards have been steady through the normal post-debut cool-off, and the 2024 season marked a genuine step change in his long-term market.

The smartest plays are PSA 10 Chrome rookies, numbered Bowman Chrome parallels, and any Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto. Watch for price pops around MVP announcements, Royals playoff runs, and any All-Star appearances.
