A Young Franchise with One of the Hobby’s Most Iconic Cards
The Seattle Mariners were founded in 1977 as an American League expansion franchise, entering the same year as the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mariners played their first decade without a winning season, became contenders in the 1990s with Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, and Alex Rodriguez, and produced the greatest regular season in AL history with their 116-win 2001 team (tied with the 1906 Cubs for the single-season record). Despite that resume, the Mariners are the only active MLB franchise never to have appeared in a World Series (Seattle Mariners, Wikipedia).
For collectors, the Mariners punch far above their on-field history. The 1989 Upper Deck Griffey Jr. rookie is arguably the most significant modern card ever printed — the card that launched Upper Deck and the premium card era. Ichiro Suzuki’s 2001 rookie class is another high-demand population. The current Julio Rodríguez era has added another franchise-anchor prospect card, and the Mariners’ strong recent drafts have created one of the more active prospect markets in the AL West.
This page walks through Mariners cards by era and lays out collecting strategies for building a Seattle PC.
Mariners Early Era (1977-1988)
- 1985 Topps Mark Langston (#625) — his rookie; #137 in that set is the Vance Law / Vern Law father-son card (1985 Topps checklist).
Mariners Modern Era (1989-2000)
This is the heart of the Mariners card catalog — the Griffey-Johnson-A-Rod era.
- 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. (#1, 1989 Upper Deck checklist) — the flagship modern card. The PSA 10 carries a heavy premium over raw; the Black Label PSA 10 is a step up again.
- 1989 Bowman Ken Griffey Jr. (#220, 1989 Bowman checklist) — the affordable alternative Griffey rookie.
- 1989 Fleer Ken Griffey Jr. (#548, 1989 Fleer checklist) — another Griffey rookie; PSA 10 copies are plentiful.
- 1989 Donruss Ken Griffey Jr. (#33, Rated Rookie — 1989 Donruss checklist) — PSA 10 is affordable.
- 1989 Score Rookie & Traded Ken Griffey Jr. (#100T) — completes the Griffey five-rookie run. The 1989 Score base set has no Ken Griffey Jr. card — Ken Griffey Sr. is #609, and its #100 is Don Mattingly (1989 Score · 1989 Score Rookie and Traded).
- 1989 Topps Traded Randy Johnson (#57T) — his Rookie Card (1989 Topps Traded checklist).
- 1990 Leaf Randy Johnson — affordable PSA 10 target.
- 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez (#15 Foil, 1994 SP checklist) — the A-Rod rookie in Mariners uniform. PSA 9 and PSA 10 copies have specific grading premiums.
Mariners Contemporary Era (2001-2026)
- 2001 Bowman Chrome Ichiro Suzuki Rookie (#351) — a mail-in redemption rookie, and the PSA 10 is the grade collectors target.
- 2001 SP Authentic Ichiro Suzuki Future Watch Rookie (#91) — the premium Ichiro rookie. PSA 10 copies are significantly more valuable.
- Julio Rodríguez Bowman Chrome Prospect Autograph (CPA-JRO, 2019 Bowman) — the flagship current-era Mariners card, with the PSA 10 the benchmark copy.
- 2018 Bowman Draft Logan Gilbert 1st Bowman Auto — Mariners ace development.
- 2019 Bowman Draft George Kirby 1st Bowman Auto — post-debut Mariners rotation star.
- 2022 Bowman Draft Cole Young (#112) — top Mariners position-player prospect.
- 2024 Bowman Draft Jonny Farmelo / Ryan Sloan — current prospect chase.

How to Build a Mariners PC
Starter collection: Current-year Bowman and Topps Chrome hobby boxes cover the Julio Rodríguez-Raleigh-Crawford core. Add PSA 9 copies of the 1989 Fleer, Donruss, and Score Griffey rookies, and a raw 1989 Upper Deck Griffey (or a PSA 8) — a focused build of 60-80 Mariners cards with multiple Hall of Fame rookies.
Mid-tier collection: Target a PSA 10 1989 Upper Deck Griffey, a PSA 10 2001 Bowman Chrome Ichiro, and a PSA 10 Julio Rodríguez Bowman Chrome Prospect Autograph (CPA-JRO, 2019 Bowman). A PSA 8 1994 SP A-Rod rounds out the vintage-modern side.
High-end collection: A PSA 10 Black Label 1989 Upper Deck Griffey, a PSA 10 2001 SP Authentic Ichiro Future Watch Rookie, and a PSA 10 Julio Rodríguez Bowman Chrome Prospect Autograph (CPA-JRO, 2019 Bowman) are the three-card franchise anchor. Complete PSA 10 runs of the five Griffey 1989 rookies (Upper Deck, Fleer, Donruss, Score, Bowman) are a popular grail among Mariners collectors.
Best Products for Mariners Fans
Current-year Bowman, Bowman Draft, Topps Chrome, and Topps Series 1 hobby boxes all feature Mariners players. Sealed 1989 Upper Deck boxes — though now expensive and often opened — remain the most historically significant hobby product. Amazon supplies sealed current-year boxes and occasional vintage sealed products at varying price points.
Mariners Team Sets and Factory Products
Team-set builders pull the Mariners from each year’s flagship Topps release. The 1995 Refuse to Lose team and the 116-win 2001 team are the two eras most Seattle collectors build around. Amazon and specialist dealers carry Mariners team sets across many eras.
