From Seattle Pilots to Milwaukee, AL to NL

The Milwaukee Brewers have one of baseball’s more unusual origin stories. Founded as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 — they played a single season in Seattle, and Topps kept issuing Seattle Pilots cards right through the 1970 set, including the franchise’s only team card at #713 (1970 Topps checklist) — the franchise relocated to Milwaukee in 1970 to become the Brewers. They played in the American League until 1998, when MLB realignment moved them to the National League Central to balance the leagues. The franchise has one pennant, in 1982, and no World Series title (Milwaukee Brewers, Wikipedia).

That history gives the Brewers a three-part collecting story: the single-season Pilots novelty, the 1970-1997 AL Brewers featuring Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, and the 1982 Harvey’s Wallbangers team, and the NL-era Brewers featuring Ryan Braun’s 2007 ROY season, Christian Yelich’s 2018-2019 MVP run, and the current Jackson Chourio-led young core.

For collectors, the Brewers are a mid-tier franchise in terms of card demand but a rising one. Chourio’s 2022 Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto has the profile of a future blue-chip card.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the most valuable Brewers baseball card?
The 1975 Topps Robin Yount rookie (#223) is the franchise's flagship vintage card, with a steep grade curve between PSA 9 and PSA 10. Paul Molitor's 1978 Topps rookie (shared with Alan Trammell) and Ryan Braun's 2007 Topps Update rookie are the other key era-defining Brewers cards.
Which modern Brewers cards should collectors chase?
Christian Yelich's 2018 Topps Now and Topps Chrome Update MVP-year cards are the modern flagships. Jackson Chourio's 2022 Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto and 2024 Topps Chrome Update rookie are current must-haves. Josh Hader's 2014 Bowman Draft Top Prospects card (TP-45, a Houston Astros issue) is the pitching-side piece from that era.
Are vintage Brewers cards a good investment?
